Child Support: How Does It Work?

Fortunately, in the majority of cases, child support can be calculated with a high degree of accuracy. The State of California has directed through law the calculation of child support and variance from it is only allowed under a short list of extenuating circumstances.. After the incomes of the mother and the father are known and the custody arrangement has been determined, a "Guideline" worksheet can be completed to determine the proper level of support. This does not mean however, that calculating child support is an easy matter. The change of even one number in the calculation could have an effect on the income that is dramatic. It is always recommended that you have an experienced attorney perform this kind of calculation. At Fischer & Van Thiel, we perform these calculations on a daily basis and are available to let you know your rights and/or responsibilities.
