The Mathematical, Analytical Approach to Marriage

Marriage is a very happy time for couples. And though it has both ups and downs, most couples are generally able to work through their problems. In some marriages, however, it turns out that the two individuals are simply just incompatible. In these particular cases, it is sometimes difficult to determine just how these once happy relationships just fall apart.

Clinical psychologists and scientist have been able to quantify just what it takes to make a successful relationship. What was revealed is quite interesting. Researchers found that there is a minimum threshold ratio that determines the likelihood of a successful marriage.

For their research, they interviewed several couples at various different stages in the marriage. They measured everything from blood pressure to breath rate, and then used complex computer data to compile the information into a mathematical model, similar to that of the stock market. Once they compiled the data and analyzed it, they were able to determine a few different things about successful couples versus unsuccessful couples.

What they found is that successful couples have a higher positive interaction to negative interaction ration than their unsuccessful counterparts. The magic number seemed to be five to one. Couples that maintained at least five positive interactions to every negative one, had a higher percentage chance of staying married for much longer than the couples who fell below this ratio.
